A design brief is a document that outlines the goals, requirements, and expectations for a new project. It acts as a guide and helps ensure everyone involved in the project is on the same page and working toward the same goals. The brief typically includes:

• Project Overview: A summary of what the project is about.
• Objectives: The main goals the design should achieve. To define the objectives, you must conduct a preliminary investigation of the competition and have an idea of how the new proposal should be strategically positioned.
• Target Audience: Who the design is for, including the users who will benefit from the project.
• Scope and Deliverables: A list of what will be created (product type/product family, production volume).
• Timeline: The schedule for completing the project, including deadlines.
• Budget: An estimate of the production cost the object should have. It is important for the designer to know this information to make informed choices that influence production costs. To estimate the budget, you must also conduct a preliminary investigation into the potential components that will need to be purchased from external suppliers.
• Mood, Inspiration, and Preferences: Examples of aesthetic styles to draw inspiration from when designing.
• Technical Requirements: Any specific technical details, size constraints, or regulations to be considered during the project.

It is the preliminary project that expresses the idea and how the product is made to satisfy the requests expressed in the brief.

Typically, this phase includes:

• An in-depth study of the existing market, including direct and indirect competition and trends.
• Aesthetic definition of the product.
• Definition of the product architecture: The aesthetic definition is not purely stylistic but considers general production aspects, dimensions, and the arrangement of all possible internal components of the product. While the project is not yet engineered in detail, it already resembles the final product.
• Definition of all phases of use to ensure maximum effectiveness and reliability of the product in all circumstances.
• Definition of the product’s ergonomics to ensure maximum ease of use in all situations.
• Creation of preliminary drawings to present the idea and the preliminary project.
• Development of initial ergonomic and aesthetic study models.
• Creation of a preliminary 3D CAD model.

The concept is developed in all its details, and technical drawings and 3D models are prepared to be delivered to suppliers or internal production.

Typically, this phase includes:

• Creation of detailed 3D CAD models and technical drawings, where manufacturability aspects are considered to ensure that the product can be easily produced.
• Structural analysis of critical components to ensure that the product can withstand the stresses it will be subjected to.
• Creation of a bill of materials (BOM) to manage all the components that make up the product.
